Daily Dose: Creativity and Originality

“Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while. That’s because they were able to connect experiences they’ve had and synthesize new things.”
-Steve Jobs

People know Steve Jobs as the man behind Apple. People may know that he is obsessed with design and elegance. Personally I don’t like Steve Jobs, but I have great respect for him for maintaining his philosophies and taking them to the next level. From this quote you see he understands the dilemma faced by artists and all creative folk who don’t live under rocks. Everything you do in life will affect your future choices and actions in one way or another. You watch a rock star as a kid and you take guitar lessons (or buy guitar hero), you see a talented dance group and you imitate their moves on the dance floor, you see a masterful work of art and you just feel shame for knowing that it will affect the rest of your practice no matter how much you try to stay completely original. Though this issue will always exist, the best way to keep it minimal is to just take your talent and innovate it to new perspectives.
